My Nutrition Journey

Nutrition can be a very confusing and frustrating topic for many people. We want to do what is best for our health, but it can seem impossible to know what the “right” things to eat are. It seems that every time you turn around some “expert” has found the miracle solution, but with so much conflicting information they can’t all be right. So how do you know what to believe?

Over the course of my journey I tried it all; low carb, sugar free, paleo, primal, vegetarian, etc. but nothing gave lasting results. I was lost!

It was then, through the course of my education, that I discovered the work of Dr. Ray Peat and the bio energetic approach to nutrition.  It uses a scientific approach to nutrition that finally made sense of all the chaos. On top of that, it actually worked! My energy and sleep improved, a lifetime of PMS and irregular cycles, completely went away, my mind was sharp, and I found I was no longer getting sick and injured all the time, like I was in the past.

But the science can be a little heavy, especially if you don’t have a background as a biochemist. There is a wonderful book by Kate Deering called How To Heal Your Metabolism. In it she takes the very complex, and beautifly breaks it down into simple, actionable terms that anyone can understand. For that reason we recommend her book to all of our clients.

While it’s best to meet your nutrition needs through nutrient dense foods like: liver, oysters, fruit, and coconut oil, whenever possible, there are some supplements that can really help. Muscle meats are high in the inflammatory amino acid tryptophan. Supplementing protein that is low in the inflammatory amino acids can help reduce stress in the body. For that gelatin or collagen make a wonderful addition to your kitchen. They are also high in glycine, an amino acid that is low in most of our diets. Gelatin and collagen are almost identical nutritionally. The difference is that gelatin will set firm (think Jello) and collagen will not.The gelatin i recommend is Great lakes in the orange can. This is the one to use for gummies and marshmallows. Collagen dissolves in hot or cold liquids and can be added to coffee or juice. I like Great Lakes or Orgain.

The soluble vitamins, A D E & K, are often overlooked, but play a vital role in many of our metabolic processes. Vitamin D is involved in creating strong bones and a healthy immune system. Vitamin K is synergistic (makes it work better) with vitamin D, helping to remineralize teeth and bones. Vitamin K also plays an important role in healthy blood clotting. A product we love that has all four of the fat soluble vitamins is EstroBan. That and many other great, clean supplements can be found on our products page.

Ultimately, nutrition is not a one size fits all endeavor. Every body is different. Of course, you should always consult your doctor before making any dietary changes. These are the things I have found that have worked for me, but I encourage you to explore and experiment to find what fits you best.
